Which country in Asia is the most developed in ecology?

On March 27th, during the STEM fair, I did a study to find out which Asian country is the best in ecology. My hypothesis was that the most developed countries, like Japan or South Korea, would be the best because they have more resources and care about the environment.

To check this, I created an index using three important factors: changes in forest areas, CO2 emissions per person, and the percentage of electricity made from renewable energy. I used data from websites like Our World in Data and Global Forest Watch.
Instead of going into the complicated math, I combined these three factors to give each country a score that shows how well they are doing in ecology.
In the end, my hypothesis was not correct. The countries that I thought would be the best were actually near the bottom. The poorer countries had the highest scores because they produce less pollution since they don’t have as many industries. The countries that rely on oil, like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, scored the lowest.
The three best countries in my index were Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Nepal. The countries with the worst scores were Qatar, Brunei, and Syria. Then the countries that I thought that would do the best ended up being at the bottom.
The project was initially created for the STEM fair, and it managed to win first place tied with another project. I was glad that all my hard work paid off and in general very proud. Creating this project brought me a lot of joy and sharing it was very important to me.
This project taught me a lot about how complex environmental issues are and showed me that sometimes the results are surprising!
