If you throw them in the garbage they might end up in a landfill or even the ocean. And this also helps pollute the water, air and land. The waste accumulated in landfills releases methane gas. Landfills also add to the groundwater pollution, which happens when rain falls on the site and rinses the toxic chemicals released by the dissolving waste, and collects at the base of the landfill, eventually reaching the groundwater.
What can you do instead?
If they are broken you can always try to repair them, or even use them to create new toys.
If they aren’t broken, but your child doesn’t use them anymore, you can always donate these toys to charity associations, for example in Charneca da Caparica, Colmeia Vigilante. You can also sell them.
Always remember that to help our planet you should buy toys with better quality so that they will last longer but the best option is to buy less toys.
So, if you’re a parent or even an adult that really enjoys toys, always remember where these things end up, what they do and how harmful they can be.
