Quinta dos Maias is one of the oldest natural reserves in Góis, where the ecosystem is very diverse. We can find the largest plantation of Chestnut trees in the area and the flora is very rich where we can find both native and non-native species of plants.
As native species we can found Folhado, which is typical of the Mediterranean climate, Gilbardeira, Cork and Oak
Polygonatum odoratum specie
trees, which are mostly found in the southern part of Portugal, specifically in Alentejo which has a climate that is dryer and warmer, Selo-de-Salomão (Polygonatum odoratum specie), one of the rarest and most beautiful flowers, it can only be found in this farm, in this region. Apart from native species, there are also several non-natives such as Cherry trees and Laurel trees. There are two micro-climes in the area where this farm is located, and according to them the diversity of the species varies a lot.
Oak tree
Like the flora, the fauna is diverse. One of the better examples is Tritão Marmoreado, an amphibian native creature that only exists in the Iberic Peninsula and that are only here from October to May. Besides the amphibians the visitors can found other species such as the Cabbage Butterfly.
The council of Góis aims to develop this farm considering the fact that this place will have more benefits if it becomes more educational related. The goal is to create a new system that allows handicapped people to feel and experience this farm as a place where environmental values intertwine with studying purposes.
