For every smartphone produced, many precious metals are required, without which the technology would not be viable. The extraction of these metals has become fundamental to the modern world economy and without this activity we would not be able to communicate and prosper. Despite this, the environmental impact is enormous and probably much greater than one would imagine. In this whole mining process, huge tons of ore are removed from soils and mountains, which will give rise to tons of solid and liquid waste, which will be deposited in the countries where the extraction takes place. For about every mobile phone we have at home, 80 kg of waste is produced. All this to keep up with the demand of the five billion people, who by 2020, will have a smartphone in their hands. It is your duty to extend the life span of your smartphone and, coming to the end of its purpose, recycle it to slow down the plunder of more geological resources from the environment. Don’t let this ghost in your house!
