Cerro da Candosa Walkways

Cerro da Candosa is a village near Góis, Portugal. What makes this village so unique and different from the other villages is the “Passadiços do Cerro da Candosa”, a  600 meters long road with 450 stairs made out of wood that was built to make the area around the village visible, this project cost at about 180,000 euros. Cerro da Candosa is built on top of a mountain so the river and the villages between the mountains are great to watch from this aspect.

When visitors are walking they can see multiple plates with some of the legends of the village, some of them are “Lenda das Rosas”, “Lenda do Cerro da Candosa”… These legends talk about the river, the mountains or the caves of the surrounding area. The fun part is that when you walk down the stairs enjoying the view, you have the option to have a look at the thrilling legends.

Passadiços, except for the fact that they enable you to watch the stunning view which includes the natural features, they attract more and more tourists every year, tourism was near to zero before this creation as villages did not use to be the number one destination. Moreover, Passadiços cover the gap of germination that was created from the wild fire that took place in 2017.

The negative aspect of the stairs is their flammability which in case of a wildfire can injure and at worst kill people. For instance, if there are people on the stairs enjoying the view and suddenly a fire goes on, they will not have the time to escape and the probability of having victims is big, with that goes the destruction of the germination in the local area. Therefore, this  is why in the summer time they don’t  organize events, because it’s too dangerous for people to walk on the stars. One of the most important negative consequences is the effect they have on the animals as Passadiços is usually crowded and animals are distracted and scared by the noises and as a result they leave, a good example for this problem is the birds which leave their nest as long as they hear loud noises, leaving their eggs or baby borns alone.

In conclusion, Passadiços has some positive and negative aspects when talking about the view or the wildfires which were our main topic. The legends can be really interesting and people will definitely enjoy every part of it.
