The Tree Babyhood

A nursery for trees is a place which prevents the extinction of some plants and especially trees. Many plants are endangered due to wildfires, diseases or pollution; Native trees are the solution to this concerning problem, after the Governor planted pine trees everywhere in the mountains.

This project started in 2003 in order to protect them, the nursery keepers go to a certain part in the woods every September and pick up some sheds and separates them into groups, that is because they only need the good ones in order to create strong and healthy trees which then are going to be placed in the refrigerator at 5 degrees for 3 to 4 weeks. Then, they take them off and as a result of the big temperature difference they start bursting to be planted next year, usually every year this nursery produces from 10.000 up to 20.000 trees and each tree takes from 1 to 5 years in order to become a small tree, in those years they grow on the mountain and they are surrounded by a fence so they can not be destroyed by the deers. There is also a small nursery inside the school where the kids can take care of trees. Moreover, on the International Day of the Tree, the nursery keepers go to the school and they help the children to plant and grow the trees. At the end of the day they have some activities as well.

The positive aspects of this project are numerous. Firstly, pine trees were flammable with fire, so planting native trees again reduced the probability of big wildfires and gave the mountains another chance. Secondly, the nursery gave people and especially tourists a chance to interact with the environment which will be an important factor for the next years. Therefore, this project will help us produce more healthy and well-oxygenated trees as the nursery keepers can take good care of them while other trees in the forests can die from infection.

One of the things that they do to raise money is by offering tourists the chance to adopt one of their baby trees, the price for this is about 15€. The most accurate problem that the nursery faces is, the small variety of trees. They accommodate very few species so the mountains can not originally return to their previous condition and if they do, it is going to take them a couple of years.

In conclusion, the nursery of Aigra Nova is very beneficial for the local community and the surrounding mountains because fires will not burn down the forests and the environment as to native trees. Generally nurseries like these should be everywhere, from small villages to big cities.
